Zephyris at the English language Wikipedia [GFDL ( or CC-BY-SA-3.0 (], from Wikimedia CommonsBiotechnology (also called biotech) is not a new discipline for the world. It has been there with the humans for thousands of years. However, back then people didn’t know the term ‘Biotechnology’. Still they kept exploiting the applications of biotechnology.  For example: humans have developed new strains of crops by interbreeding different species of crops. They also used the technique of selective breeding extensively, without knowing the fundamental principles of biotechnology. It is like you are driving a car, without knowing the complex mechanisms that are helping you drive the car.

In simple words, we can say that the biotechnology is a marriage between the biology and the technology. You can remember it by breaking the term biotechnology in two parts, i.e. Bio + Technology.

Geez, are we discussing on biotechnology or on mathematics?

Don’t worry; we are surely discussing the biotechnology here. We can use ‘Bio +Technology’ to make it simple to understand the definition of biotechnology. Bio means life. So, when you use any form of life (any form means any form whatsoever, like a whole organism, a cell, an enzyme, protoplasm, a single strand of hair, a drop of blood or anything related to life you can think of) with the application of engineering or other scientific principles to produce or modify goods and services for the benefit of humankind and/or environment, you are applying the biotechnology.
